Over this period, and largely thanks to the efforts of our partners, we have observed a notable shift in how energy - and specifically the agri-energy nexus - has been integrated into the broader dialogue. In 2023, the regenerative agriculture and productive use of renewable energy (RA-PURE) nexus remained largely peripheral and underexplored, with only one dedicated side event on the topic scheduled for Day 0, the official opening of the summit. The following year, two official side events on the nexus were secured; however, engagement remained limited, as most participants were representatives of organisations who spoke at these sessions. In contrast, 2025 marked a significant turning point, with eight events dedicated to the agri-energy nexus. These included the official launches of the Power for Food Partnership and the Agri-Energy Coalition, as well as increased participation from energy sector champions. Alongside this growing attention to the agri-energy nexus, we also saw decentralised renewable energy incorporated as a key element under AFSF, driven by the collective efforts of Agri-Energy Coalition members. This is an important shift as it acknowledges that energy plays a critical role in food systems and cannot be omitted from the conversation if we want to move towards greater sustainable efficiency and productivity.

Creating space for integrated approaches

Last year, we began to observe a positive shift in how agriculture actors frame their work – from a focus on on-farm agricultural activities and food security to a focus on food systems in their entirety. This broader perspective includes off-farm entry points such as transport, processing, and consumption, and is also reflected in AGRA’s decision to rename its Africa Agriculture Status Report as the Africa Food Systems Report. This shift within the agriculture sector is important, as this new emphasis on food systems creates greater space for climate and energy interventions, opening new opportunities for nexus-style engagement and collaboration. This broadening, more inclusive framing was also observed at COP30, where the need for integrated, cross-sectoral approaches to address climate challenges was strongly emphasised.

The launch of two mutually reinforcing initiatives

The Power for Food Partnership and the Agri-Energy Coalition both officially launched their movements at the AFSF in September last year. Both initiatives are dedicated to unlocking the potential of renewable energy in agriculture through distinct approaches and complementary strengths. The timing of these initiatives and their shared ambitions to bridge the gap between the agri-energy sectors are clear indications of both the urgency and the opportunity to advance integrated approaches and solutions. Together, they underscore a clear shift toward coordinated, cross-sector action on the agri-energy nexus that will lead to the reimagining and transformation of food and energy systems.

With the foundational year behind us and a clear sense that the movement for cross-sectoral thinking and collaboration is taking shape, this year the Power for Food Partnership will work to further demonstrate that the potential to transform food systems in Africa can be unlocked when integrated agri-energy solutions are applied. Yet critical evidence and knowledge gaps still hinder decision-making and slow down the scale-up of RA-PURE solutions, making it harder for policymakers, investors, and farmers to move with confidence. As the Power for Food Partnership, we will bridge this evidence gap by developing business case studies that draw on implementation and on-the-ground knowledge, demonstrating where the application of RA-PURE solutions is economically and socially beneficial, and the contexts that are not yet suitable for adopting these solutions and the reasons behind it.

This evidence will be instrumental in making the case for increased financing, as we work to leverage more public and private investment for RA-PURE nexus interventions across East Africa. Simultaneously, we will support our partners - from farmer associations to civil society organisations - to develop the evidence and tools needed, and we will link and champion them to the platforms and spaces where they can successfully advocate for policy changes that facilitate agri-energy integration. By working closely with our partners, advocating for change, and bridging the evidence and knowledge gap, we aim to make 2026 a tipping point for the movement - deepening the argument for alignment on agri-energy policies, making the case for financial investment, and bringing out the true potential of the agri-energy nexus in Africa's food systems agenda.

Learn more about the Power for Food Partnership and the Agri-Energy Coalition and follow their work on LinkedIn.
","full_html","
At the start of any year, it is good practice to take stock of where we are and what we have achieved to date, both individually and collectively, before determining how to move forward.

Learn more about the Power for Food Partnership and the Agri-Energy Coalition and follow their work on LinkedIn.

https://admin.powerforfood.org/jsonapi/node/news/c3e00bfb-0c12-434e-9b79-c7e3b5a5556e?fields%5Bnode--news%5D=field_blocks&include=field_blocks
"2026-04-21T08:13:00+00:00
"/updates/reflecting-2025-momentum-building-key-milestones",48,[270,271
"
At the start of any year, it is good practice to take stock of where we are and what we have achieved to date, both individually and collectively, before determining how to move forward.
