Fact sheet: Gap Analysis for Unlocking the RA-PURE Nexus in Kenya

Abstract

This fact sheet summarises the findings of a February-March 2026 gap analysis on regenerative agriculture and productive use of renewable energy (PURE) practices among smallholder farmers across seven counties in Rift Valley and Western Kenya. It highlights strong awareness but low adoption of integrated RA-PURE solutions, with 70% of farmers aware of RA-PURE approaches yet only 17% having adopted them, and identifies solar irrigation as the most preferred entry point. Financing emerges as the most significant barrier to uptake, with 71% of respondents citing high upfront costs and 54% citing limited access to finance. The fact sheet also outlines supplier ecosystem gaps, farmer support needs, and the importance of differentiated county-level approaches, inclusive financing, and stronger institutional support to accelerate adoption and scale practical integration at farm level. Findings are based on primary data collected from 537 respondents through household surveys, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions, complemented by a review of peer-reviewed literature and policy sources from 2015-2025.
